Aquametro GreenBLEND: Maximum Fuel Flexibility for Cost-Effective & Compliant Voyages
Until now, environmental regulations for the maritime industry have largely been driven by the European initiatives such as FuelEU Maritime, EU-ETS and EU MRV. However, major companies—including fuel suppliers, bunkering firms, and ship operators—are now beginning to expand their biofuel businesses in Asia, particularly in Singapore.
Recently, NYK and Petrobras have come into focus regarding biofuels in the Asian market. NYK is testing biofuel on one of their coal carriers, while Petrobras has entered the Asian biofuel market with its first sale of VLSFO containing 24% renewable biofuel (B24 – 24% ISCC-EU certified UCOME, used cooking oil methyl ester) in Singapore. This highlights the growing recognition of biofuels' potential to reduce CO₂ emissions in the shipping industry, even beyond Europe.
What can a quick and economical solution look like, that would allow many to benefit from the still limited amount of biofuel available? Use biofuel (B100), respective biofuel blends (B1…30), as drop-in to conventional marine fuels with the Aquametro GreenBLEND.
- By using Aquametro’s GreenBLEND the bunkered biofuel blend will last for a much longer distance which optimizes OPEX.
- Even with very small blend ratios of e.g. 2% biofuel you can reach compliance with FuelEU while saving money.
- The Aquametro GreenBLEND offers you maximum flexibility – the blending percentage can be changed while the vessel is in operation. Giving you the choice to use the fuels that are available with the most economical blend ratio for your planned voyage.
With this fully certified, automated fuel change-over and blending system, the blending process of different fuel types is precisely controlled, allowing for real-time regulation and monitoring of the blending ratio using essential measurement data within the fuel system. The GreenBLEND fuel blending system can be integrated into an existing fuel system with very little technical effort.
To address potential incompatibility or sludge formation from biofuel blends, the GreenBLEND system can be enhanced with an Aquametro Homogenizer. This dynamic milling machine improves fuel quality for optimized combustion while simultaneously minimizing wear on engine components like fuel pumps and injectors whereas it also reduces the risk for clogged filters.
Both, the GreenBLEND and the Homogenizer from Aquametro come with a Type Approval by DNV.
The GreenBLEND is successfully in operation for many years. A Finish ship owner,
was able to double the share of bio-oil in all used fuel onboard on one of its cargo vessels by using GreenBLEND.
The increasing adoption of biofuels in the Asian market underscores the need for efficient and flexible fuel management solutions. SSA (Singapore Shipping Association) and CIMAC are also prepared for this topic and already offer corresponding guidelines.
With the Aquametro GreenBLEND system, ship operators can seamlessly integrate biofuel blends, optimizing fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and ensuring compliance with minimal technical effort.
